Environmental Resources Department
Visit a nature center, take a quiet walk in the woods, become a Master Gardener, canoe the river, join 4-H or ride horses through the wilderness - it's all here in St. Lucie County!
St. Lucie County’s Environmental Resources Department is responsible for environmental permitting, protecting and managing the County’s nature preserves, operating the Oxbow Eco-Center and providing environmental education, agricultural assistance and programs through a partnership with the University of Florida’s Cooperative Extension Office. The Environmental Resources Department consists of two divisions; the Environmental Lands and Regulations Division and the Cooperative Extension and Environmental Education Division.
The Environmental Lands and Regulations Division regulates new development by implementing the environmental regulations in the Land Development Code (Municode). These regulations include vegetation removal permits, dune vegetation trimming permits, tree mitigation, wetland protection, environmentally sensitive habitat and endangered species protection and landscaping requirements. For specific environmental regulations, see Chapters 6 and 7 of the County’s Land Development Code (Municode). The Environmental Lands and Regulations Division also acquires and manages the County’s 7,791 acres of environmentally sensitive lands or preserves.
The Cooperative Extension and Environmental Education Division, through a partnership with the University of Florida, provides education, training and assistance in agriculture, 4-H, Oxbow Eco-Center, natural resources and environmental education, family and consumer sciences, windstorm mitigation, pesticide applicator certification, commercial horticulture and citrus production.
