Wedensday, December 30, 2009 - Commissioners To Recognize Jan. 9 As Delia Lane Day

At Tuesday's regular meeting, the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners are scheduled to proclaim Saturday, Jan. 9 as "Delia Lane Day" in honor of the St. Lucie County resident's 105 birthday.

Born on Jan. 9, 1905 (the same year St. Lucie County was first incorporated), Delia Lane grew up in County Galway in the Village of Lackagh outside Galway City, Ireland. At the age of 18, she sailed to the United States, where she later married John Lane (also from County Galway, Ireland) and resided in Boston, Mass. Ms. Lane has seven children, seventeen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A current resident at Brighton Gardens of Port St. Lucie, Ms. Lane's advice for longevity is to eat healthy and keep moving. As a child in Ireland, she walked five miles daily to school.

The St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners are expected to approve the proclamation claiming Friday, Jan. 9 as "Delia Lane Day" at its next regular meeting, which is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 5 at 6 p.m. Commission meetings are held in the Commission Chambers on the third floor of the Roger Poitras Annex of the St. Lucie County Administration Building, 2300 Virginia Ave., Fort Pierce. The meeting will be broadcast live on SLCTV (Comcast 21) and online at www.stlucieco.gov/slctv.
