Tuesday, May 25, 2010 - Beachgoers Asked To 'Pick It Up, Pack It Out'

St. Lucie County officials are asking residents and tourists who visit area beach parks and preserves this Memorial Day Weekend to "Pick It Up; Pack It Out."  If you bring it with you; be sure to "pack it out," and if you see trash; please "pick it up."

Beachgoers and park visitors are asked to bring an extra trash bag with them when enjoying the beaches this holiday weekend, to help pick up any unwanted trash that could otherwise be left behind on our beaches.

St. Lucie County parks and preserves are in great condition, safe and ready for some long weekend sun and fun. Officials are asking residents to help keep them clean, by contributing their time and effort to making sure that trash is removed before it can harm our fragile coastal environment.

Full trash bags can be left inside, or next to, provided trash cans, for ease of collection. County staff will double its efforts to empty garbage cans at parks during the holiday weekend and immediately afterward.

Those picking up trash should not touch any potentially harmful objects or hazardous materials, such as nails, broken glass, etc. Additionally, residents are reminded not to remove any natural flotsam, such as seaweed and natural driftwood.

If there are residents that would like to participate in future organized beach cleanup efforts, they can register online at www.volunteerstlucie.org or call the United Way at (772) 464-5300.
