Friday, June 4, 2010 - Elevated Bacteria Levels Advisory For The North Fork St. Lucie River
The St. Lucie County Health Department, working with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and St. Lucie County is issuing a precautionary notice regarding the North Fork of the St Lucie River.Routine sampling by the County Health Department indicated widespread elevated enterococcus and fecal coliform levels found in the digestive systems and feces of animals. Re-sampling will continue until bacterial counts return to safer levels.
Boaters, swimmers and fishermen are advised to minimize contact with water in the North fork of the St. Lucie River. If water contact is unavoidable, rinse off with clean water or, when you get home, shower with soap and water.
No significant levels of bacteria were found in routine samplings of St. Lucie County beaches.
